IFS Faces - Irmtraut Rathjens de Suster

IFS offers me an environment in which I can develop my skills while contributing to bringing safe products to the market that benefit consumer health.

Irmtraut Rathjens de Suster
Senior Technical Manager & IFS Wholesale and Cash & Carry Standard Manager

Irmtraut Rathjens de Suster has been a valued member of our IFS Family for nearly ten years. She started as Senior Quality Assurance Manager for the IFS Integrity Program, followed by IFS Auditor Management. Since 2022, she has been responsible for our Wholesale and Cash & Carry Standards as Standard Manager. In this blog post, she introduces herself.

Combining agriculture with food science

Growing up on a farm in northern Germany greatly influenced my professional journey and instilled a strong appreciation for agriculture and the food industry. After school, I pursued a degree in agricultural sciences and spent a few years working in research at various universities. Later, I decided to shift my focus and obtained a degree in food science and technology. Upon graduating from university, the world presented itself full of opportunities.

A career around the globe

After graduating, I had the opportunity to live abroad for 20 years in the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan and Norway, where I worked in various food industry sectors. My primary focus was on product development, which involved cross-departmental collaborations that deepened my understanding of business needs. This broad experience, combined with my training in quality management, provided me with the skills and knowledge I needed for the next steps in my professional career.

Tackling new challenges at IFS

In 2015, I relocated back to Germany, where I started working at IFS as Senior Quality Assurance Manager for the IFS Integrity Program. In this position, I was responsible for the quality assurance of the IFS Standards, reviewing reports of IP Checks and handling complaints. Later I transferred to IFS Auditor Management and reviewed auditor qualifications in addition to preparing and conducting examinations.

I transitioned to the Standard Management department as a Senior Technical Manager in 2020, focusing on developing and improving the IFS Standards, Programs and Checks. My role involved collaborating with various stakeholders to align standards with current industry needs and regulatory requirements. In addition, I took over the content coordination of the IFS Guidelines and ensured that they met industry-specific requirements and were aligned with IFS and stakeholder objectives.

The joy of working in a collaborative environment

In 2022, I became responsible for the Wholesale and Cash & Carry Standard, focusing on implementing and updating its technical content. During the recent review of the IFS Wholesale and Cash & Carry Standard, I had the opportunity to collaborate closely with a productive and supportive working group.

The diversity of stakeholders within the IFS Working Groups is a significant advantage. It enables discussions that incorporate multiple perspectives. This multifaceted approach fosters effective communication and understanding, which are essential for achieving success with our standards and programs.

Merging Passion with Profession

After nearly a decade at IFS, I still find immense joy and fulfilment in my work. The organisation has successfully cultivated a warm, family-like atmosphere enriched by wonderful colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds around the globe. I value the opportunity to learn from their unique perspectives in technical fields and how they address challenges. This experience has taught me that the German approach is just one of many ways to achieve our goals.

Throughout my career, I became passionate about food production and processing technologies throughout the supply chain, with a particular interest in industry innovation. When I'm not at my desk, cooking is one of my greatest joys. I love experimenting with flavours while exploring a wide range of cuisines from around the world.

I am excited to further apply my skills and passion for food within the positive, supportive, and versatile environment at IFS.
