• IFS has published a new white paper to help companies understand the upcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

• The first PPWR requirements will take effect on 12 August 2026, with further requirements to follow as part of the regulation’s phased implementation.

• IFS has tested the IFS PPWR Conformance Self-Assessment in a pilot phase as the first component of the upcoming IFS PPWR Conformance Solution.

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), Regulation (EU) 2025/40, introduces new requirements for packaging and packaging waste across the EU. From 12 August 2026, the first set of requirements applies. For businesses and their supply chain partners, this means that packaging-related processes, documentation and responsibilities within the supply chain require greater attention.

New IFS White Paper on PPWR

To support companies in understanding and preparing for these requirements, IFS has published the new IFS PPWR White Paper “From Regulation to Action: Navigating the New Packaging Rules”. The document provides in-depth insights into the PPWR, including its scope, objectives, implementation timeline and key requirements. It also explains the different roles defined by the regulation and highlights why companies should start reviewing their responsibilities now.

IFS PPWR Conformance Solution

IFS will offer a solution that enables businesses to assess conformance with the regulation. It will help businesses assess the implementation status of PPWR-related processes and share information with their business partners. The approach is practical, process-oriented and aligned with the needs of businesses and their supply chain partners.

The IFS PPWR Conformance Self-Assessment, which has been successfully tested during a pilot phase, will serve as the starting point. Participating companies complete an online questionnaire in the IFS Database and upload supporting documents where applicable. The result provides an initial indication of whether relevant processes are already in place and helps identify potential gaps, risks and necessary follow-up actions.

In a later step, IFS will offer the IFS PPWR Conformance Check as an optional follow-up measure. This check is intended to provide a more in-depth evaluation of PPWR-related processes conducted by independent trained IFS Auditors or Assessors. It can be performed on-site or remotely, either as part of an IFS Audit or Assessment or as a standalone check.

Based on the pilot results, IFS will provide further information as development progresses.
