The International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and IFS Management GmbH have signed a Scheme Endorsement Agreement to endorse the IFS Food scheme as a sub-scope of the IAF Multilateral Recognition Arrangement (MLA). The agreement was signed April 2023.

IFS Food aims to ensure the safety and quality of food products and processes, and is applicable to food processing companies and businesses that pack loose food products. The scheme covers senior management responsibility, quality and food safety management systems, resource management, planning and production processes, measurements, analysis, improvements, and food defense. It can provide several benefits to companies, including improved business reputation, compliance with regulations, higher flexibility, more effective use of resources, and the ability to trade with customers requiring third-party audits.

The recognition of IFS Food as an IAF MLA sub-scope will allow the acceptance of accredited certification to this scheme in multiple markets with only one accreditation, reducing costs and increasing value for businesses and consumers.

“The recognition of IFS Food as an IAF MLA sub-scope underscores the importance of reliable and consistent food safety practices in the international market. This recognition will enable businesses to demonstrate their competence and enhance consumer confidence, ultimately leading to safer and higher-quality food products for all,” said Emanuele Riva, IAF Chair.

“Our global network places great emphasis on the integrity of our standards. IFS is a global pioneer in establishing an integrity program and select and training auditors, who must pass a written and oral exam with us. Accreditation plays an essential role in ensuring integrity. With the IAF and its members, an independent body verifies that our standards meet all the required criteria. The recognition of IFS Food versions 7 and 8 under the IAF MLA contributes significantly to our certificates being recognized and trusted worldwide,” said Stephan Tromp, IFS Managing Director.

About IAF:

The International Accreditation Forum (IAF) is a global association of accreditation bodies, conformity assessment body associations and other organizations involved in conformity assessment in fields including validation and verification and the certification of management systems, products, processes, services and persons.

IAF promotes the worldwide acceptance of certificates of conformity and validation/verification statements issued by conformity assessment bodies accredited by IAF MLA signatories, and seeks to add value for all stakeholders through its activities and programs.

About IFS:

IFS Management GmbH, owned by the retail associations HDE and FCD, develops globally recognized product quality and safety standards and development programs for companies within the food and consumer goods supply chain. IFS comprises six different food and non-food standards and four development programs. These assess if private label and branded product suppliers can deliver safe, quality products in line with regulations and customer specifications. This way, IFS helps ensure that consumers can trust that the products they find on retail shelves are safe and of good quality.

IFS launches Deforestation Check to ascertain EUDR compliance

Today, IFS announced the launch of the IFS Deforestation Check Self-assessment. This initiative is designed to help companies comply with the upcoming EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) due diligence requirements and enhance supply chain transparency. IFS presents it under its IFS Supply Chain Solutions brand, which offers a range of process checks for managing supply chain risks.

Stephan Tromp, Managing Director of IFS, highlights the importance of the new tool: “The EU Deforestation Regulation will soon come into force, aiming to promote sustainable supply chains that protect forests and biodiversity. The IFS Deforestation Check provides a straightforward self-assessment process that can be complemented by an on-site or remote check by an auditor. This way, companies will gain an overview of their compliance status and can demonstrate their commitment to sustainable sourcing.”

Get EUDR-ready in one or two steps

The IFS Deforestation Check employs a two-step approach

  1. Completion of an online self-assessment questionnaire with automated risk analysis and recommendations.
  2. Potential follow-up with an on-site or remote assessment conducted by certification bodies within the IFS Network.

Whether step two is necessary will depend on the self-assessment result and internal risk analysis. An on-site or remote assessment by an auditor may be recommended for specific suppliers to gain more comprehensive insights.

Benefit from an accessible and widely supported solution

“We collaborated on this project with ImpactBuying, KPMG and osapiens. They contributed their extensive experience in sustainability and supply chain analysis, which enabled us to offer an accessible and widely supported solution that works on various IT platforms”, explains Tromp. “Retailers in our network have expressed their interest in this check, so we can start right away”, he adds.

ImpactBuying already offers the IFS Deforestation Check Self-Assessment on its platform. At the beginning of October, it will also become available on the osapiens platform, while the IFS Database will host it at no cost for both certified and non-certified businesses starting in November. Business partners such as retail companies may indicate which platform they prefer for their suppliers to use. Suppliers can, in turn, ask their suppliers in the upstream supply chain to complete the self-assessment questionnaire on one of the platforms.

All three IT platforms will automatically analyse the completed questionnaires and indicate the level of compliance.

IFS Support for the Deforestation Check

To help companies complete the self-assessment questionnaire, IFS published a detailed guidance document that explains the intention behind each question and clarifies what evidence a company should provide to substantiate its statements. Also, an industry e-learning course, developed in partnership with Impact Buying, is available. We also support a series of webinars in different languages that osapiens offers.

"Get ready for EUDR compliance today by starting with the IFS Deforestation Check Self-assessment," concludes Tromp.

More information about the on-site or remote part of the check will become available before December 2025.
