IFS FOCUS DAY FOR LOGISTICS AND PACKAGING IN THE USA

The first IFS Focus Day of the New Year took place on January 11th in Chicago, USA where food safety professionals joined us at the headquarters of US Foods.

IFS Managing Director, Stephan Tromp, and the IFS representative for North America, Pius Gasser, informed participants about the latest news and developments of our IFS Logistics and PACsecure Standards. We are pleased to observe a growing interest in these IFS Standards in North America.
More and more retailers and food producers realize that is not sufficient to simply monitor if products are produced for safety and according to their specifications. They now realize that the entire supply chain must be considered to ensure product safety. Products must be packaged in appropriate materials, handled, and transported in such a way that cross contamination and product damage is prevented from occurring.

The use of packaging materials that are not suitable for the product or results in incorrect handling during transport impacts product integrity making in-store handling more complicated, increases costs and can negatively impact retailer image. In the worst case, unsafe products can lead to health risks for consumers.

For these reasons, more and more retailers are asking suppliers to become certified for product integrity and safety. IFS Logistics and IFS PACsecure certified companies can show their customers that they have a resilient safety and quality management system in place and that they are able to handle products or supply packaging in a safe manner and according to customer specifications.

The risk-based approach of IFS gives every company assistance in developing a tailored made solution for their individual food safety management system. In addition, IFS offers several tools that facilitate the work of the quality managers, such as the IFS Database that helps to monitor suppliers, the IFS App for internal auditing, and the new IFS Trend Risk Monitor which supports them in their daily risk assessment.
Participants in Chicago enjoyed the fruitful exchange of information and experiences. We thank US Foods, Kestrel Management and NSF for supporting our Focus Day.
